INTRO TO ALPINE CLIMBING

Learn the fundamentals of training, technique, strategy and safety in this four-day foray into the alpine.

This 4 day intro is an intensive trip into the mountains where you'll learn all about snow and ice travel, alpine hazards and how to avoid them, navigation and route finding, glacier travel techniques, rope management, snow/ice anchor construction, crevasse rescue, equipment selection and use, ice climbing techniques, and we attempt a summit!

This course is perfect for beginners looking to get into the mountains or for experienced rock climbers looking to gain snow and ice experience.

Client to guide ratio 4:1 or less

You will be required to sign a waiver on the morning of your climb. Please familiarize yourself with it here… ACMG waiver

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet in Squamish or Golden, or a custom meeting place as discussed

Gear Check

Drive to the mountains, hike into camp (or use a helicopter for an additional fee)

Setup camp

Cover navigation, basic knots and pack our bags for the following day

Day 2 - Cover snow travel, ice axe and crampon use, roping for glacier travel, glacier travel theory, snow/ice anchor construction, crevasse rescue

Day 3 - Attempt a summit and/or go ice climbing

Day 4 - Additional crevasse rescue practice, review any topics from the course

Pack up camp

Hike out and drive home

*actual itinerary will be based on weather, conditions, and your goals!

What’s Included:

  • Technical climbing equipment (eg. harness, helmet, crampons, ice axe, rock shoes, carabiners, ropes, rack, first aid and rescue equipment)

  • Guide’s Fees

What’s not Included:

  • Transport to or accommodation in Squamish or Golden BC, for information about arranging transport/accommodations click here for Squamish or here for Golden.

  • Personal mountain equipment (eg. mountain boots, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, backpack, tent, headlamp, clothing etc.)

  • Food and fuel

  • Transport Squamish/Golden to the alpine, participants typically carpool and split gas

  • Any hut fees or camping fees depending on location, typically courses are run in areas where camping is free
